    Something old, something new

Posted by adam on August 18, 2011

I’ve got a new track out!

Before we start putting the new album out and about (not long now) I popped together a little cover version of All I Do Is Think About You by Tammi Terrell. Yep, it’s the song written by Stevie Wonder that later surfaced as a straight ahead version on Hotter Than July. But before that Tammi recorded it with a lot more swing and possibly a little more emotion (depending on your taste).

I heard the Tammi version only very recently, in fact I think it only came to light a few years back. I fell immediately in love with it.

Every year we put together a little Christmas EP at Wah Wah 45s. Each year I plumb the Motown end of the Christmas song catalogue, cos that’s what I remember from being a kid. The Motown Christmas album WAS Christmas to us then, still is now for me.

So I like to experiment with that sound and era a little bit. After finishing last year’s track I still wasn’t sated and wanted to carry on the experiment. I was practicing bass more in prep for recording my album and I was also trying to improve my drum playing for the album too. Messing around with cover versions is such a good way to practice.

It occurred to me that I might have a little play with All I Do. So I had a listen to the track, looked for some notation for the Tammi version, couldn’t find any and went about doing it the old way – playing by ear.

I worked out the keys, the drums, the guitar and the bass and just popped it all down. Fortunately Stac is also a massive fan of the version and was well up for having a little sing song with me.

So that’s why it happened. A bit of practice. I didn’t feel nervous about covering a Stevie tune cos for the most part I never really intended to do anything with it. But a few people liked it and we were encouraged to put it out on the new Wah Wah 45s Allo Love compilation.

So you can pick up my little record with Stac for a meagre £1. Listen and buy above if you are so inclined.

Also check out this remix I did for Stac in a similar style…

    Next up – album shennanigans.

jesuiskablamO thanks for saying hello - and for listening. 7 hours ago andyw1 PHEW! thanks Andy! 7 hours ago dannyjlewis @ScottWozniak but posting it anywhere is no better than Sony hiking the Whitney prices when she died. Gold rush. 11 hours ago dannyjlewis @ScottWozniak if its for personal live use I could see doing an edit. People always want that cathartic community connection. 11 hours ago dannyjlewis it's a difficult call. Ultimately it depends on the person right? I think a remix or edit is wrong. A tribute mix not so much. 12 hours ago
