Bonobo album launch

Today Bonobo launched his new album out into the world with a live preview at Ronnie Scotts. I was lucky enough to be there to hear the Bonobo band bringing Simon Green’s new album Black Sands to life for the very first time.

I’ve had the opportunity to listen to the album a few times over the last couple of days and for me it’s easily his best to date. There is a little more of everything here and it’s all the better for it.

Initially I was nuts about string laden beauty El Toro and while I love the more electronic and deep moments of this album it is the more jazz expeditions like El Toro, Animals and Black Sands that I find the most moving. They keep calling me back for another listen.

With a well practiced and confident band including keys, guitar, sax and flute, triggered sounds and samples, Simon on bass, Andreya Triana on vocal duties for this tour and the amazing Jack Baker on drums, the Bonobo live show is worth checking when you get a chance.

The music is desceptively calm and restrained but you will, often by surprise, find yourself suddenly wrapped in a swelling wave of bass, drums and atmospheric horns that will carry you to a climactic ending that’s always worth the wait.
